As they walked toward the house, Luke talked with his grandfather Jonathan.
Jonathan was sixty years old, but he looked too young to be called an old man.
His arms were strong and sturdy, and he was still working as a blacksmith.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cYou look just like your father,\u201d Jonathan said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cYou knew my father?\u201d Luke asked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cYes. He was the man who took my daughter away,\u201d Jonathan replied.
\u201cThat face is not easy to forget.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

But Jonathan\u2019s eyes were smiling.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cAlex was a good man,\u201d he went on.
\u201cHe did not look down on Jews. That was rare among Greeks.
He was humble, too. He helped my business and was a good customer.
I always thought it was only natural that Dinah fell in love with him.
He was a fine young man.
If only he had accepted circumcision and become my adopted son,
there would have been no problem.
But for his parents, that was impossible.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Jonathan sighed softly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cYour grandmother and I could not accept that our daughter
was taken by people who did not believe in our God.
Now I regret it.
Perhaps I should have looked further ahead.
Alex was searching for the true God, after all.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Luke hesitated, then asked the question that worried him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cDo I need to be circumcised too?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cDo you plan to live here forever?\u201d Jonathan asked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Luke replied.
\u201cI promised my grandfather in Troas.
After three years, I must go back and continue studying to become a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI see,\u201d Jonathan said thoughtfully.
\u201cFor those who are not Jews, circumcision should never be forced.
If you come to believe that our God is the true God,
then you may choose to receive it.
Some strict groups will complain, of course,
but you don\u2019t need to worry about that.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Jonathan smiled again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cNow then, today is the Sabbath.
After lunch, you may do as you like.
Tomorrow I\u2019ll start teaching you some work.
While you stay here, you\u2019ll need to help out.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

He pointed toward the hills.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cIf you climb that hill, you\u2019ll see a fine view.
You\u2019re allowed to go that far even on the Sabbath.
You might even meet the \u2018chief of the hill,\u2019
a boy about your age.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Jonathan laughed cheerfully.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n
