{"id":728,"date":"2026-02-03T17:48:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T08:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/primitivechristianitystudy.org\/?p=728"},"modified":"2026-02-03T17:57:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T08:57:07","slug":"ancient-boy-soran%e2%91%a4%e3%80%80mount-tateshina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/primitivechristianitystudy.org\/?p=728","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Boy Soran\u2464\u3000Mount Tateshina"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/primitivechristianitystudy.org\/?p=728\" title=\"\">\u21d2\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u306f\u3053\u3061\u3089\u3092\u30af\u30ea\u30c3\u30af\u3057\u3066\u306d\uff01<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It is a strange and wonderful thing that after winter, spring always comes.<br>And yet, it always does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Spring comes when the snow melts,<br>when drops of water fall, drip by drip,<br>from the black branches of the trees.<br>It comes as if it had been waiting all along\u2014<br>flowers of many colors begin to bloom,<br>and butterflies dance like petals carried by the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Sometimes, even in the cold days of winter,<br>spring visits for just a moment and makes our hearts feel light.<br>But it is quickly chased away by the rough, icy wind of winter.<br>True spring is different.<br>Warm spring breezes gently push the cold winter winds<br>far away, into the refrigerator of the northern lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Spring finally came to Fujimi Village,<br>where Soran and his mother Tomo lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cJimmy, fetch!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soran threw a wooden stick,<br>and a small brown puppy ran after it with great joy.<br>The stick was a little too thick,<br>so the puppy could not hold it in his mouth at first.<br>At last, he grabbed the thinner end<br>and dragged it all the way back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cGood boy, Jimmy. Well done!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soran patted the puppy all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jimmy was one of three puppies born a month earlier<br>to a dog owned by Grandpa Seitaka.<br>Soran chose Jimmy himself and was allowed to keep him.<br>He named the puppy Jimmy, after Fujimi Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jimmy was quieter and shyer than the other two puppies,<br>and that was why Soran liked him.<br>But once Jimmy started eating well,<br>he grew strong and lively,<br>becoming the most energetic and mischievous puppy of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As spring came, Tomo began to feel restless.<br>She could no longer hold back her wish<br>to return to her mountain village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThere might still be a heavy spring snow,\u201d<br>Grandma Yuka said again and again.<br>\u201cWhy don\u2019t you stay here another month?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But Tomo\u2019s heart would not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt will be all right,\u201d Tomo replied.<br>\u201cAt this time of year, the forest gives us plenty of food,<br>and it won\u2019t be cold enough to freeze.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOh dear,\u201d Grandma Yuka sighed.<br>\u201cNo matter what I say, it\u2019s always \u2018go home, go home,\u2019 isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She wanted Tomo and Soran to stay forever.<br>To her, they were already like her own daughter and grandchild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cGrandma,\u201d Tomo said softly,<br>\u201cI will never forget your kindness.<br>We will come and see you again. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In her heart, Tomo thought of Grandma Yuka<br>as her true mother.<br>They talked every day about so many things.<br>Those days were truly happy ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soran loved Grandma Yuka too.<br>They joked and laughed together<br>like friends the same age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The morning they left was warm and sunny.<br>The trees around Fujimi Village<br>were covered with pale green buds.<br>Mount Fuji could be seen clearly in the distance,<br>though the air was a little hazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Almost everyone in the village came to see them off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSoran! Next time we meet,<br>we\u2019ll have another sumo match!\u201d Katsuya said,<br>gripping Soran\u2019s hand.<br>\u201cI won\u2019t lose!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf you find your home village,<br>let us know somehow,\u201d Masato said.<br>\u201cWe\u2019ll come visit you.<br>We\u2019re friends for life, you know.<br>Someday, you\u2019ll be the village chief,<br>and I\u2019ll be a village chief too.<br>Then our villages will hold a summer festival together\u2014<br>big fires, dancing all night, like this!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Masato began dancing,<br>raising and lowering his fists.<br>\u201cIt\u2019s the Bear Cub Dance!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soon, the other children joined in.<br>Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThat\u2019s not a bear cub\u2014that\u2019s a monkey cub!\u201d<br>\u201cNo, you\u2019re a snake cub\u2014you wiggle too much!\u201d<br>\u201cHey, are you a mountain pigeon now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">People danced, copying all kinds of animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At last, Grandpa Seitaka Jiro shouted,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHow long are you all going to dance?<br>The sun will set!<br>Tomo, Soran\u2014you are people of this village.<br>Come back anytime.<br>There are plenty of men who would like Tomo as a bride!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes, yes!\u201d the men shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of them were immediately smacked by their wives.<br>\u201cExcuse me, but I\u2019m right here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Laughing and crying at the same time,<br>Tomo and Soran left Fujimi Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jimmy followed them, wagging his tail.<br>But he soon grew tired,<br>so Soran placed him in a grass-woven bag<br>hanging from his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSoran, did you see them?\u201d Tomo asked as they walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes,\u201d Soran said.<br>\u201cThe little Koboshi lady was waving<br>from Grandma Yuka\u2019s shoulder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAnd I saw a young Koboshi man<br>waving from Grandpa Seitaka\u2019s head,\u201d Tomo smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI saw him too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They looked at each other,<br>held hands tightly,<br>and walked on with strong, steady steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">On the first day, they walked north along the coast.<br>After two days, they hoped to reach a seaside village<br>where someone could tell them the way<br>to Tomo\u2019s home village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That evening, they made a fire<br>behind seaside rocks and slept there.<br>They ate the food Grandma Yuka had packed for them.<br>There were many dried sweet potatoes<br>and dried persimmons\u2014Soran\u2019s favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The western sky turned orange at sunset.<br>Warm sea breezes blew softly.<br>It was warm enough<br>that they almost didn\u2019t need a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOh!\u201d Tomo suddenly cried out,<br>staring at the western sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soran looked too,<br>but he could only see purple mountains<br>and red-colored clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cMount Tateshina,\u201d Tomo whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She began to run along the shore.<br>Not understanding why,<br>Soran ran after her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tomo climbed a large rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt must be Mount Tateshina,\u201d she said firmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The mountain\u2019s shape was just like the one<br>seen from her home village.<br>Far beyond the purple hills,<br>it appeared deep blue in the evening light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">By chance, they had reached a place<br>where the mountain could be seen\u2014<br>a mountain invisible from Fujimi Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The mountain lay almost directly west.<br>If this was truly the mountain near her village,<br>then they only needed to walk west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Determination filled Tomo\u2019s face.<br>Soran watched her silently.<br>The sea breeze stirred her hair.<br>Below them, Jimmy whimpered softly.<br>The sound of waves went on and on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That night, the air grew colder.<br>By morning, it was chilly and cloudy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSoran,\u201d Tomo said,<br>\u201cjust as I told you yesterday,<br>we\u2019ll head west now.<br>Crossing the mountains will be hard,<br>but let\u2019s do our best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d Soran said.<br>\u201cI\u2019m stronger than last year,<br>and I\u2019ve grown taller too.<br>I won\u2019t slow you down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWell, how dependable,\u201d Tomo laughed.<br>\u201cWith such a strong man,<br>we\u2019ll be safe even if we meet a bear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cA bear is scary,\u201d Soran said,<br>\u201cbut I could handle a raccoon dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhat about a wild boar?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIf it\u2019s a small one!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019m counting on you,\u201d Tomo said,<br>imitating Grandma Yuka\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They laughed,<br>then suddenly felt a little lonely<br>thinking of Grandma Yuka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They walked straight west,<br>following rivers when they could,<br>and sometimes pushing through forests with no paths.<br>Even after walking all day,<br>they could not escape the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At evening, they found a hollow<br>at the base of a large tree<br>and decided to sleep there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Dinner was bamboo shoots and mushrooms<br>they had gathered along the way,<br>roasted over the fire.<br>The bamboo shoots were sweet and delicious.<br>Soran ate until he was full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As the night grew colder,<br>he kept adding firewood<br>so the fire would not go out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The next morning,<br>Soran woke with a strange feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Everything was white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A heavy spring snow had fallen\u2014<br>true to its name,<br>it had piled up to Soran\u2019s knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tomo had risen early<br>to look around.<br>Deep footprints led into the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The snow had almost stopped,<br>but the sky remained gray and cold.<br>It might snow again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soran peeked out<br>from the hollow in the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>I must look like a baby fox,<\/em> he thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Jimmy came too.<br>Soran lifted him up,<br>and together they peered out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cJimmy and I are fox brothers,\u201d Soran said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Tomo returned, breathing white clouds of breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s cold,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Soran quickly added more wood to the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWhere did you go?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI climbed a mountain with a good view,\u201d Tomo replied.<br>\u201cI named it Monomi Mountain.<br>With this snow, it\u2019s dangerous to walk in the forest,<br>so I looked for a village nearby.<br>Maybe Grandma Yuka was right\u2014<br>perhaps we should have stayed longer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWas there a village?\u201d Soran asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cYes.
