{"id":190,"date":"2026-01-04T19:45:45","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T10:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/primitivechristianitystudy.org\/?p=190"},"modified":"2026-01-30T18:09:25","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T09:09:25","slug":"the-difficulty-of-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/primitivechristianitystudy.org\/?p=190","title":{"rendered":"O You of Little Faith"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/primitivechristianitystudy.org\/?p=188\">\u21d2\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u306f\u3053\u3061\u3089\u3092\u30af\u30ea\u30c3\u30af\u3057\u3066\u306d\uff01<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">The way we speak is a difficult thing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Words meant to encourage can end up hurting someone.<br>Words spoken gently, with the intention of guiding, can somehow leave behind irritation instead.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Did Jesus Christ ever have such bitter experiences?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">His harsh denunciations of hypocritical people are well known.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-0bb579515719608a54f44ab35479f042\"><em>(Matthew 23:27\u201328)<\/em><br><span class=\"bold-green\">\u201cWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead men\u2019s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Of course, words like these provoked hostility. Those who hated Jesus eventually put him to death on a stake.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">But what I want to think about here is not Jesus\u2019 words toward his enemies.<br>Rather, I want to reflect on the way he spoke to those who were drawn to him\u2014especially to the disciples who walked with him day after day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">There is an intriguing phrase, one that was never spoken to his opponents:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span class=\"fz-28px\"><strong>\u201cYou of little faith.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">What tone did Jesus use when he said this?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">This phrase appears five times in Scripture. I will quote them all.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8d95799a2c368b5e9802c7ae81d68a81\"><em>(Matthew 6:30\u201331)<\/em><br>\u201c<span class=\"bold-green\">\u2026If God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O <span class=\"bold-red\">you of little faith<\/span>? Therefore do not worry, saying, \u2018What shall we eat?\u2019 or \u2018What shall we drink?\u2019 or \u2018What shall we wear?\u2019<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9c53e78038aaa1d36d24f590677f8dc3\"><em>(Matthew 8:24\u201327)<\/em><br>\u201c<span class=\"bold-green\">\u2026And behold, a great storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, \u2018Lord, save us; we are perishing!\u2019 And he said to them, \u2018Why are you afraid, O <span class=\"bold-red\">you of little faith<\/span>?\u2019 Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men were amazed, saying, \u2018What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?\u2019<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fff2615bb6310708771a53edf7bbec18\"><em>(Matthew 14:29\u201331)<\/em><br>\u201c<span class=\"bold-green\">\u2026He said, \u2018Come.\u2019 So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, \u2018Lord, save me!\u2019 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, \u2018O <span class=\"bold-red\">you of little faith<\/span>, why did you doubt?\u2019<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8f4447a8ee7ed08815dd31dbf35d48b9 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>(Matthew 16:5\u20139)<\/em><br>\u201c<span class=\"bold-green\">\u2026When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, \u2018Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.\u2019 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, \u2018We brought no bread.\u2019 But Jesus, aware of this, said, \u2018O <span class=\"bold-red\">you of little faith<\/span>, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet understand\u2026?\u2019<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6150eab8bcff5e4a420385b7c4d03423 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>(Luke 12:28\u201329)<\/em><br>\u201c<span class=\"bold-green\">\u2026But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O <span class=\"bold-red\">you of little faith<\/span>! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">The first and fifth passages may well have been spoken in similar circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">What is clear from the context is this: Jesus addressed <strong><span class=\"fz-32px\">his close disciples<\/span><\/strong> with the words, \u201cyou of little faith.\u201d And they were not spoken harshly, nor hurled at them coldly.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Those who heard these words likely felt gently corrected\u2014lovingly reminded to trust more deeply. There is no doubt that the tone was entirely different from the sharp, uncompromising words spoken to his opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Consider, for example, the moment when these words were spoken to Peter personally.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Peter steps out boldly onto the stormy lake. But partway across, fear overtakes him, and he begins to sink.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e84af8d8f83fb36e3e0a2f5bac1a9c4 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"bold-green\">O you of little faith, why did you doubt?<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">I can say this with confidence: Peter never forgot those words for the rest of his life. Nor did he forget the strength and feel of the hand that grasped his arm.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">I cannot say it with certainty, but perhaps, in the final moment of Peter\u2019s martyrdom as an old man, these words echoed once more in his mind. And perhaps he whispered with quiet pride, \u201cLord, this time, I did not give in to doubt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Jesus Christ, who is called <em>the Word<\/em>, was truly a master of words.<br>His brief, perfectly timed phrases leave a deep impression and linger long in the memory of those who hear them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">All the more so when his words are spoken in affection to those he loves. Even when they take the form of gentle irony\u2014indeed, precisely because they do\u2014they are etched into the hearts of his beloved disciples as unforgettable lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"fz-24px\">Ah, Lord.
